Bignity (2002) – Van der Want Letcher

Bignity (2002) – Van Der Want & Letcher

“Richer, deeper and darker than ‘Low Riding’, again these arrangements hang strongly on the guitar and vocal interplay. Enormously melodic with hooks that work their way easily into your grey matter. This is essential listening.” Ross Campbell, OpenRecord

“Could easily be the best SA non-dance music album I’ve heard. Not this week, or this year, but ever.” SL Magazine

‘Bignity’ is a welcome return for the popular SA duo, Matthew van der Want and Chris Letcher, after the success of their previous album, ‘Low Riding’, which received a SAMA nomination in 1999 and was voted by the Mail & Guardian as one of the best albums of that year. The duo have been on a longish sabbatical but are now back with an album that is already getting many murmurs of approval.

The first single off the album, ‘Saving the Scenes’, introduces us to a “happier” Van der Want/Letcher, who are known for their more “serious” music. Also on the album is ‘One Time’, a track that brought Matthew van der Want back on to the music scene when it reached No. 6 on the 5fm Top 40 charts. The track was originally recorded for ‘Bignity’, but Van der Want’s solo album, ‘Play My Way’, was released a year earlier, and a remixed version of ‘One Time’ appeared on that.

‘Bignity’ features some of South Africa’s best musicians such as Robin Auld (who appears on ‘Lenscap’), Ian Herman and Kevin Gibson. Van der Want/Letcher will be embarking on a national tour from the end of August until the end of September and will be playing at local clubs (Bassline, Up The Creek, Mystic Boer, etc.) and festivals such as WOMAD, Oppikoppi and Woodstock.
